STATEMENT FOR THE COVE-UP OF RACHEL CORRIE’S MURDER
In August 28 2012, the Israeli court of Haifa and judge Gerson rejected a lawsuit filed by the family of Rachel Corrie, the 23-year-old American who was killed by a military bulldozer in 2003, ruling that the death was an accident for which Corrie was responsible and, further, that there was no proof the soldiers acted with intent to harm or criminal neglect. We have to underline the fact that Corrie’s death occurred as she was trying to prevent the Israeli army from the operation of demolishing 1,700 Palestinian houses in Gaza Strip, which resulted to leaving 17,000 Palestinians homeless.
Eventually, it’s more than clear. The parliamentary totalitarianism uses similar means to justify the state crimes in every corner of the earth. Political and military commands resort to the same shifts to cover up the incidents of police brutality, war crimes and state arbitrariness. The common denominator is the assault to “the enemy within”.
This assault is continuous against those who struggle. It’s the same story about the killings of activists by Israeli commandos on the ships of “Freedom Flotilla” as it is about the bullets that the Chinese army debited to the families of the victims in Tiananmen square, the exonerating verdicts for the NATO crimes in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere or the cover up of police atrocities in Greece and all over the world.
Should we expect from the Israeli state, in consistency with its murderous intentions, to charge Rachel Corrie’s family with the running expenses of the bulldozer that killed her?...
As Antiwar Internationalist Movement, we regard this verdict as insulting for Rachel Corrie and her family. We also regard it as the continuation of the politics of military cruelty against the Palestinians, austerity and suppression against the Israeli people, hazardous aggression and war threats in Middle East and South East Mediterranean, cruel vindictiveness against the Israeli comrades which are imprisoned due to their denial to participate in the Israeli army crimes against the Palestinian people.
Along with the Turkish, the Greek and Cypriot state Israeli government already makes new wars against workers and immigrants in M. East and the Mediterranean.
The labor movement should fight both in Greece and Israel against their strategic cooperation, not only in solidarity to the Palestinians but also for their common interests, their common future and hopes. It’s time for the Left to explicitly condemn the state policy of Israel against its own people – Israelis and Palaistinians – and fight along with the working class for the overthrow of the exploiting, unequal and suppressing regimes.
